editTips and Tricks

Below are 10 tips and tricks on how to write spellbinding fantasy.

  1. Have a clear sense of your fantasy world so you can express it effectively to your readers.

  2. Make your characters complex and unique - don't use stereotypical fantasy characters.

  3. Avoid using only fantasy cliches (e.g., standard monsters, races).

  4. Identify the rules and laws of your world, and follow them.

  5. Get to know your world through short stories (e.g., world lore, mini adventures).

  6. Incorporate your world building into the plot so it doesn't feel forced.

  7. Don't have characters re-explain things they already know; instead weave the information in over time.

  8. Use all five sense to help bring your fantasy world to life.

  9. Don't go "over the top" with your character names - your reader should be able to pronounce them.

  10. Draw a map of your world and plot out your characters' route(s) to give yourself a clear idea to follow.
